The Essential Qualification – Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH)

The Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH) is a nationally recognised qualification required by anyone who wishes to apply for a Personal Licence to sell or authorise the sale of alcohol in England and Wales. It is a legal requirement under the Licensing Act 2003, and forms a critical part of ensuring that alcohol is sold responsibly and in accordance with the Law.

1. Legal Requirement for Personal Licence Application:

To apply for a Personal Licence, individuals must first obtain the APLH qualification. This confirms that the applicant understands the legal responsibilities involved in alcohol sales, including Licensing Law, the role of the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS), and the four licensing objectives.

2. Flexible Learning Options:

The APLH course is designed to be accessible and flexible, and can be achieved through two separate routes…

Classroom-Based Learning:  Ideal for those who prefer face-to-face instruction, this format allows learners to engage directly with us as the trainer, and fellow students in a structured environment.  The day-long Course concludes with an invigilated exam.

Online Learning:  For those with busy schedules or remote access needs, the course is available online.  Learners will need a PC with a webcam, preferable operating on Google Chrome.  They can study at their own pace using our interactive modules, video tutorials, quizzes, and mock exams. Upon completion of the course, learners must pass an exam, taken online via a secure digital invigilation platform.  The exam is monitored using a webcam and smartphone to ensure exam conditions are met.  This means learners can complete the qualification from home or work, without compromising integrity.

The Exam itself:  This is 40-question multiple-choice exam (so the correct answer is actually staring you in the face all along!) with a pass-mark of 28.

3. Pathway to Becoming a DPS:

Holding a Personal Licence is essential for anyone who wishes to become a Designated Premises Supervisor – the individual legally responsible for authorising alcohol sales at licensed premises.  The APLH is therefore a key stepping stone for managers, business owners, and hospitality professionals.

4. Application Process:

Once the APLH qualification is achieved, the learner receives a certificate which must be submitted to their local council along with other documentation (e.g. DBS check, passport photos) to apply for their Personal Licence.

Whether studied in a classroom or online, the APLH equips individuals with the knowledge and credentials needed to sell alcohol legally and responsibly.  It’s a vital qualification for anyone working in Licensed Premises – and a gateway to further roles in the hospitality and retail sectors. The Licensing Guys have trained over 1,000 new entrants into Hospitality and would be delighted to assist you too.
