The Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH) is the essential, nationally recognised qualification required for anyone who wishes to apply for a Personal Licence to sell or authorise the sale of alcohol in England and Wales under the Licensing Act 2003.
What Does the APLH Cover?
The qualification ensures that candidates understand the responsibilities and legal requirements involved in alcohol licensing. Key topics include:
- The roles and duties of licensing authorities
- The four licensing objectives
- The application process for Personal and Premises Licences
- Operating conditions and enforcement powers
- The responsibilities of a Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS)
- The effects of alcohol on the body, and society
- Age verification and preventing underage sales
Why Is It Required?
To apply for a personal licence, you must:
- Be aged 18 or over
- Hold the APLH qualification
- Pass a criminal record check
The APLH is regulated by Ofqual and typically delivered through accredited training providers, such as The Licensing Guys ™. It culminates in a multiple-choice exam, and successful candidates receive a certificate which must be submitted with their Personal Licence application to their local council.
