1. Can I apply for a Personal Licence?
Yes, if you…
- Are aged 18 or above
- Hold an accredited licensing qualification
- Have not had a Personal Licence forfeited in the last five years, and
- Do not have a ‘unspent’ conviction for a ‘relevant or foreign’ offence or required to pay an immigration penalty.
- Have the right to work in the UK. NB A UK Passport or Right to Work Card is usually sufficient.

2. Do I need a Personal Licence?
You do if you want to sell or authorise the sale of alcohol by retail in accordance with a premises licence or a temporary event notice.
3. Do you need a Personal Licence to apply for a Premises Licence?
No. But if you intend to use the Premises for the sale of alcohol you will need nominate a Designated Premises Supervisor on your application form who must hold or intend to hold a Personal Licence and can be yourself.
4. How do I get a Personal Licence?
You must apply to the Licensing Authority (usually the Council) where you live and provide the following:
- Your Qualification Certificate.
- A valid Basic DBS Certificate
- A copy of your Passport or Right to Work Card, or similar
- Two passport photos, one certified on the reverse
- The completed application form, available from the Council.
- A Previous Convictions Declaration Form also from the Council.
- The fee for the application – currently £37.
5. How much does a Personal Licence cost?
The costs are:
- Council Application fee – £37

- The cost of your Licensing Qualification– fees vary.
- Any fee payable if you employ a company to complete the paperwork for you.
